Wiki Loves Monuments invites you to photograph urban landscapes and buildings or rediscover treasures of your picture archives
The World’s biggest photography competition is held again in September. This year’s focus is on the change of urban environments and cityscapes. The competition is held in Finland and around the world 1–30 September.
You can participate in the Wiki Loves Monuments competition with photographs depicting change in cityscapes and urban environments, provided they display a registered cultural heritage site. Sites like this include the built environments of national significance and built heritage registered by the Finnish Heritage Agency or buildings protected by the city plan. Furthermore, it is possible to participate by rephotographing an old picture that reveals how a place has changed. Due to the coronavirus pandemic we also encourage to skim through your photo archives for existing images. You can also think about new angles, such as aerial or drone images. Follow the competition in the Facebook group where you can post photo challenges to other participants, and the blog posts on this website that give perspective to the questions of urbanization or urban decay.
Which cityscapes are important to you? How have towns and villages changed over time?
Photograph sites in your neighborhood on your own or with your family members. With limited mobility, we encourage you to also look into already existing images in your collections. Upload images to Wikimedia Commons 1–30 September to join the competition. In Wikimedia Commons, the images will be freely available under CC BY-SA 4.0 license for anyone to use. You can participate with images you have taken yourself during 2020 or earlier. Please note these aspects:
- Remember physical distance to other people when photographing. Follow guidelines.
- Flying drones is controlled, remember to take into account relevant regulations.
- Remember to respect privacy. When photographing on private property, ask for permission. When there are people present in your pictures, remember to confirm consent to publishing the images.
The Finnish competition is arranged by Wikimedia Finland in collaboration with the Finnish Heritage Agency, Museum of Finnish Architecture, and MARK – Finnish Association of Landscape Architects. The competition runs in Finland for the fourth time with a goal to inspire everyone to see and appreciate the cultural heritage around us.
